Looking back I realize that it was during my grade school years that I first sensed a call to the priesthood. The problem was that I, like the prophet Samuel, did not know that it was God speaking to me. As a result I proceeded through high school and college with a desire for a call but assumed that God surely would not be calling someone like myself to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ. Through my many years of formation both in and out of seminary I, like Samuel, have finally been able to realize that in fact God is calling me and as I return for my last year of studies I can say with an open and undivided heart: “speak Lord, your servant is listening”.
My message to anyone discerning a possible vocation is to be open and not assume that God would not call sinners like themselves to the priesthood or religious life. Instead we should try to learn how it is that God speaks to us and what is He saying.
