A Message from Bishop Finn

If God is calling you to the diocesan priesthood or to the consecrated life as a priest, sister, or brother, you must say “yes” for at least two reasons:

1) Because the Church needs you!  We can’t do what Christ wants us to do without you.

2) Because You need this vocation! This is the way God wants you to reach your happiness and salvation.

In sixth grade, I began to realize that God was calling me. I entered the high school seminary, went on to College and Theology, and was ordained a Catholic priest on July 7, 1979. For almost 28 years, I have served God and His people in parishes, schools and in various special works in the Church. As Bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, I have the joy of working each day with priests, religious brothers and sisters, deacons, and lay men and women who serve the parishes and institutions in 27 counties. They do a great job, but I truly believe we have not been getting all the priests and religious God wants us to have.

I often remember our Lords’ words, “The Harvest is plentiful but laborers are few. Beg the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers.” I beg God every day that we will receive all these priestly and religious vocations we are supposed to have to carry out the work of the Church.

This work calls for capable, competent, and above all, holy priests and religious. God may be calling you. If so, you have to say, “Yes!”
