Service in Education

The great Catholic educator St. John Bosco was asked what he desired most as a Catholic educator. His response: Da Mihi Animas,“Give Me Souls.” St. John Bosco never wavered in his application of the Preventive System of Education with reason, religion, and kindness as the principal means of cultivating souls for Christ.  It is with this back drop that I welcome you to our diocesan Webpage on Catholic education.

The Church’s mission to educate our children in the faith has as its root the Divine Teacher, Jesus Christ Himself.  The great missionary mandate he set forth to go proclaim the Gospel to all the nations (Mt 28:17-20) serves as one of the chief cornerstones of Catholic catechesis. The Divine Teachers use of his own Baptism to initiate His ministry to the World (Mt 3:1-12); Miracles-Wedding Feast at Cana (Jn 2:1-12); Parables-Prodigal Son (Lk 15:11-32); Healings-Healing of the Blind Man (Jn 9:1-12) and Jesus’ catechetical instruction to his Apostles.(See: Acts 16:16-19; Mt 10:1-15; Mt 6:7-15).

The emphasis of Catholic education is to maintain and foster a true Catholic Identity amongst our students where an application of the faith is exercised in whatever academic discipline they choose for their future. The rigors of our academic curriculum must and will continue to challenge our students as they pursue knowledge for the sake of truth. Truth is at the heart of Catholic education because of the very fact that a Catholic Educator must immerse him or herself in truth in whatever academic discipline he or she exposes to students.

Within the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, the principal mission of our Catholic schools is to place the student in an environment where an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ is fostered. An atmosphere rooted in love, reason, religion, and kindness has proven throughout the course of the Church’s instructional mission as the effective means of providing sound instruction in all academic courses of instructions, especially in our Catholic faith. All this leads to a proclamation of the Kingdom of God (Lk 9:2).

Authenticity and fidelity serve as two cornerstones in our mission to educate our children in Catholic schools. Understanding these two pillars will give the whole family a sound foundation that what the student is learning is indeed Algebra II, Economics, Biology, and religious instruction. We as a diocese are not involved in the mission to promote a false curriculum.  St. Timothy reminds us of our call to:
Refute falsehood, correct error, give encouragement – but do all with patience and with care to instruct. (2 Tim 4:2)

In conclusion, love must be the final cause of our instruction. Whatever the academic discipline may it will be done out of love for Christ, our students, and our mission to educate. Our education is one of joy in Christ. I hope you enjoy browsing through our Webpages and that we are able to answer any initial questions you may have. May the grace of the Divine Teacher Jesus Christ be with you always!
