El Salvador Martyrs Prayer Service
In December 1980, four US Church women were raped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave outside San Salvador. Jean Donovan, Ita Ford, Dorothy Kazel and Maura Clark were working to keep hope and faith alive in El Salvador.
Thirty years later, people of faith recall their faithful witness and dedication to the Gospel. A service to remember, celebrate and pray will be held at St. Regis Church, on December 5, 2010 at 3 p.m. In preparation for this service, the 30th Anniversary Planning Committee, with members from both the Diocese of Kansas City-St.Joseph and the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is offering an educational piece for use in schools and parishes. The materials include short biographies, a look at El Salvador in the 1970s and 1980s, insights into social justice, poverty, and human rights and discussions questions to accompany the film, Roses in December.
Although your curriculum is set for the year, and good teachers have good plans, we believe this material could be integrated into your existing plans in a number of ways. We encourage you to do so, particularly when teaching about vocations, saints, social justice, Church history, and cross-cultural topics.
The materials will be sent to the Religion departments, but we urge you to share among your colleagues, and encourage you and your students to attend the service on December 5.
