Faces of Hunger

At 1 pm and 2 pm, the student body will kick-off a Catholic Schools Week effort to collect 10,000 cans of soup for area food pantries.  The rally features skits and educational activities to help students put a face on the people who turn to food pantries in the metro area.

You Can Go Home Again

Throughout the diocese, every school begins its local celebration with the same thing - a community Mass honoring parents, teachers, students, alumni, and volunteer.  At Nativity, it's a family affair.  Family Mass at 10:30 am.  Breakfast sponsored by the Kights of Columbus to follow.

It's hard to keep a secret with more than 12,000 children involved.  Students in the Catholic schools have kept their secret under wraps.  A special delivery arrives for Bishop Finn at 10:00 am.

St. Francis Xavier School

Take No Prisoners - Just Loose Change

Students at St. Francis Xavier are on a mission: to help Haiti and to support Noyes Home.  Student council representatives will launch a penny war and it will be "take no prisoners, just loose change."  Classrooms also will fill mugs with packages of instant soup and hot chocolate for Open Door Food Kitchen.

Let's Make Cents for Light House

With the help of students at St. Andrew the Apostle, the Light House can continue to provide services to women facing crisis pregnancies.  Throughout Catholic Schools Week, students, parents and parishoners are raising money and collecting essential items for Light House.

Multiplying the Bears

Even the youngest children know how Jesus fed a vast multitude by multiplying the loaves and fishes.  Watch how more than 2,000 students multiply the smiles at Children's Mercy Hospital, when they gather Teddy Bears for patients.  This five-school community service project is sure to yield a bounty of bears.

Pope Benedict XVI has declared this "The Year of the Priest."  To show appreciation for Fr. Shawn Ratigan, 6th grade students are planning to surprise him with lunch on Tuesday, Feburary 2nd.  The student body is also collecting non-perishable food destined for Harvesters and St. James Place and blankets for the Salvation Army.  Special deliveries of donated items are scheduled for Thursday, Feburary 4th.

Finals for the Catholic Knowledge Bowl: The Challenge - Let the Game Begin

At 4:00 pm, middle school teams will face off in the final challenge of the first annual Catholic Knowledge Bowl.  Finalists will go head-to-head in the AOHS commons.  To stump the stars, the competition features bonus round questions delivered by Bishop Finn via video-cast from Rome.

Project Peanut Butter Feeds the Homeless

When the bell rings at the end of the school day, St. Gabriel the Archangel students won't be heading home for after school snacks.  At 3:45 pm, they'll head to Catholic Worker House, 912 East 31st Street, to deliver the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches tha they made during the school day.

Our Lady of the Presentation

A We Were There Newscast

Founded in 1939 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Presentation School opened 70 yeas ago with 20 students.  At 11:00 am, Spirit Day features a "We Were There" newscast.  Drawing from journal entries made by Sister Barbara Sellers, founding principal, alumni newscasters will announce grants from the Project Pennies Foundation, the Teacher of the Year, and charities that will benefit from student fundraising in Catholic Schools Week.
