Crusades

This four week course is a general survey of the Crusades and the crusading era, and most especially the causes and call for the First Crusade in 1095.  We will discuss the identities of the crusaders, their beliefs, actions and impact upon history.  The surprising link between medieval peace movements and papal reform and the rise of the crusade movement will be examined. Several modern myths about the Crusades will be examined in detail. Learn why they were fought and be surprised when you compare this to the popular understanding of history.
